AFGHAN GIRL OF WAR By Christine Van Camp Zecca $2,700 Medium: oil paint on canvas Futility of War Period Post 9/11 Images of Afghan Girl and woman in burka behind the heart are from photo by Francesco Zizola of the Khoja Bahauddin Camp for women and children waiting for a food distribution (Arms Against Fury: Magnum Photographers in Afghanistan, ed. by Robert Dannin, 2002, p.207). I envisioned the plight of traumatized women and children victims of our invisible wars with their hearts bound and exposed even as they are compelled to wear their death shrouds. The landscape is of unburied dead soldiers in a barren Shi’ite cemetery. This is one version of what we call collateral damage that we never seem to add to ever-increasing dry statistical body counts. The protecting rib cage is broken open to release a bound heart. |
